12/1/79 Stanley Theater
OK, first off the quality of this SBD is exceptional. As for the music? Well, right of the bat let me say that the He's Gone>Gloria Jam>CC Rider>Jam into Drums is just amazing. Can't go wrong. That section alone gets this show top marks. The first set has a Jack Straw>Sugaree opener that is very, very tasty with the 17 minute Sugaree featuring one of the better Brent solos you're gonna hear. The rest of the set is pretty good; mellow, but good with a very nice 12 minute Althea that slides into a punchy MSNS closer. As stated before, the real meat of the show comes in the second set. The set starts with a China/Rider that while good, is not very special and the LLR that follows is OK. As a testament to the clairity of this board, during a slight pause before starting the LLR, I beleive it is Jerry or maybe Phil who can be heard to say "What's next? "Looks Like Pain"?" Maybe I'm wrong, but its' funny anyway. Then the boys take off the kid gloves for the aformentioned He's Gone expedition. Anywho, after the D/S, there is a hopping NFA with a rockin' jam into a sweet Black Peter>Sugar Mags closer. All in all on the surface this show might not appear as anyting special, and lisenting to only first set might still leave one cold as it is rather mellow and Jerry's voice has seen better days. But patience is rewarded for those who stay with it. Give it a shot; don't like it? No money lost. One of the better fall/winter 79 shows? Maybe not, but the pre-drums string alone is worth a listen. Have a good day, everyone.

I love the December 79 shows. All of them are hot. Your link was to the second set, but don't miss the first set, it is rock solid.

Now that I think about it, Sept-Oct-Nov 79 were just as sweet.

Hence the 'When Will It End?'

Brent was a nice addition. The newness of it all must have brought some new life into the band.

That's a good one! I myself am discovering 9/1/79, another one of those great sept-dec shows

http://www.archive.org/details/gd79-09-01.sbd.dodd.18898.sbeok.shnf

It's got a great Scarlet>Fire, a sweet slow Friend of the Devil, and I even liked the LLR on this one! (that being probably one of my 10 least favorite dead songs)
